How to Clean Your PS5 Controller: A Beginner-Friendly Guide
Share
Cleaning your PS5 controller can seem daunting, especially for first-timers. With many screws and delicate components, it's crucial to take a methodical and careful approach. This guide will walk you through the process step-by-step, with tips to make it beginner-friendly.
Tools and Materials Needed
- Screwdriver: Phillips PH00 with a magnetic tip (ideal for small screws).
- Plastic Pry Tool: For safely opening parts without scratches.
- Tweezers: For handling small parts and debris.
- Soft Brush: A toothbrush with soft bristles works well.
- Cotton Buds: For precise cleaning of tight spaces.
- Microfibre Cloth: To clean external surfaces without scratching.
- Isopropyl Alcohol (70% or higher): Safe for electronic components.
- Compressed Air Can or Air Blower: For removing fine dust particles.
- Plastic Containers or Trays: To organise screws and components.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prepare Your Workspace
- Work on a clean, flat surface with plenty of light.
- Place a soft mat or cloth underneath to protect components.
- Keep tools and materials organised for easy access.
Step 2: Remove the Black Faceplate
- Use a plastic pry tool to lift the black faceplate near the analogue sticks.
- Gently work your way around the edges until the faceplate pops off.
Step 3: Locate and Remove the Screws
- There are four screws holding the controller together:
- Two under the L1 and R1 buttons. Use a pry tool to lift these buttons and expose the screws.
- Two at the bottom corners, revealed after removing the faceplate.
- Use a Phillips PH00 screwdriver to remove these screws and set them aside.
Step 4: Detach the Back Cover
- The back cover is secured by two clips near the speaker area.
- Use a plastic pry tool to gently release the clips.
- Once loosened, place the controller analogue sticks down to expose the battery.
Step 5: Remove the Battery
- Disconnect the battery by pulling it upwards using your fingers or tweezers.
- Place it in a safe area away from your cleaning station.
Step 6: Unscrew the Battery Casing
- A single screw holds the battery casing in place. Remove it with the PH00 screwdriver and set it aside.
Step 7: Disconnect Ribbon Cables
- Locate the ribbon cables connecting the motherboard and gently disconnect them.
- Use tweezers to pull the cables straight upwards to avoid damage.
Step 8: Remove Additional Screws and the Motherboard
- Unscrew the two screws securing the motherboard on the left and right sides.
- Carefully lift the motherboard, being cautious of the attached vibration motor wires.
Step 9: Clean Internal Components
Cleaning the Button Area and Flex PCB
- After removing the motherboard, locate the DualSense Flex PCB (Printed Circuit Board), which connects to the buttons.
- The buttons are held in place by a plastic retainer. Carefully remove this retainer to expose the button membranes and the contact points.
- Each button has a black circular conductive pad underneath that makes contact with the Flex PCB. If these areas become dirty, the buttons may stop responding.
- Use a cotton bud dipped in isopropyl alcohol to clean the black conductive pads and the contact points on the Flex PCB.
- Allow the alcohol to evaporate fully before reassembly.
Dust and Hair Removal
- Use tweezers or a soft brush to remove dust and hair from inside the controller.
Alcohol Cleaning
- Apply isopropyl alcohol to a cotton bud and gently clean the analogue mechanisms, trigger components, and other hard-to-reach areas.
Compressed Air
- Use a compressed air can or air blower to clear out remaining dust and ensure the components are dry.
Step 10: Clean the Buttons and External Surface
Button Cleaning
- Remove the buttons (e.g., X, Square, Circle, Triangle, D-pad) from the plastic retainer.
- Soak the buttons in isopropyl alcohol for a few minutes to loosen dirt.
- Use a soft brush or microfibre cloth to clean the buttons thoroughly.
Cleaning the Outer Casing
- Use a microfibre cloth with isopropyl alcohol to clean the grips, seams, and external surfaces.
- Focus on areas where sweat and dirt accumulate.
- For tight spots, use a cotton bud or a plastic picker tool to clean around the edges.
Pro Tips for First-Timers
- Take Photos: Document each step to remember where components, screws, and parts belong.
- Be Patient: Avoid rushing; forcing components can cause damage.
- Use Magnetic Tools: Magnetic screwdrivers help prevent losing screws in tight spaces.
- Test as You Go: After reassembly, test each button and function before fully closing the controller.
Step 11: Reassemble the Controller
- Reconnect ribbon cables and secure the motherboard with screws.
- Place the buttons back into the plastic retainer, ensuring they align correctly with the black conductive pads and the Flex PCB.
- Reattach the battery casing and battery.
- Snap the back cover and black faceplate back into place.
Final Check
After reassembly, test the controller thoroughly. Ensure the buttons, triggers, and analogue sticks function smoothly. With practice and patience, you'll have a perfectly cleaned controller ready for action!
